Benefits of Dental Sedation
Health and Fitness January 27th. 2012, 3:00pmFor people who need a lot of dental work or who are afraid of the dentist sedation may be a good way to get the necessary work performed without a lot of stress. Dental sedation options include IV sedation, inhalation sedation and oral sedation. Sedation is not the same as anesthesia, as you are not put totally to sleep. You are just in a dream-like state and very relaxed. You won’t necessarily remember much of what happened while you were sedated. Your recovery time may be faster than with anesthesia, depending on the type of sedation used.
Dental sedation can make it easier for some people to have the dental procedures they need. Some people have strong gag reflexes, suffer from conditions that cause involuntary movements, need particularly painful or long treatments or are afraid of dental treatments. These people may avoid necessary procedures because of these problems, causing their dental problems to worsen. However, dental sedation probably won’t help if it is the dentist that you are afraid of and not the procedure itself.
When you have a lot of dental work you need done, dental sedation can help make it easier. The dentist will be able to complete more work in a single session, and you won’t feel pain during the treatment. You won’t need to take as much time off of work for dental visits, and the dentist will have an easier time completing the procedure since you will be more relaxed and have an easier time keeping your mouth open for the necessary amount of time.
If you need to have a particularly long or painful treatment or if you are scared of a particular dental procedure, check to see if your dentist offers dental sedation. Be sure to speak with your dentist to find out about his qualifications before you undergo dentist sedation. Choose a dentist who is very experienced both in the procedure you need and in administering sedation. Depending on the type of sedation used, you may need someone to drive you home and watch you until the effects of the sedation have totally worn off.
